chi∙mae∙ra     n.

1. Greek Mythology: A fire-breathing female monster usually represented as a composite of a lion, goat, and serpent. 2. Genetics: An organism, organ, or part consisting of two or more tissues of different genetic composition; produced as a result of organ transplant, grafting, or genetic engineering.

For Chimera, we’re interested in seeing work that disrupts the human-animal binary. Work that explores the meeting places between humans and other animals, or between plants and animals, or animals and their environments will be considered.

Humans have always identified “animal” qualities within themselves and praised animals for having “noble” or human qualities. Chimera will showcase work that blurs the line between humans and non-human animals. The hybridity of human/animal/plant species need not be literal in the work; rather, artwork can be chimeric in interaction and systemic to a world where the lines between humanity and animality are increasingly blurred.

Verum introduced this exhibition last year and it proved to be a crowd favorite, so they are very excited to see what this years’ call will attract. They don't seek to drive the work, they only hope to unveil your unique vision. All mediums and modes of expression are welcome from low brow, pop surrealism, abstraction, and more. This call emphasizes the idea of revealing and/or honoring a narrative legacy.  The term Kingdom may be interpreted in many ways, not necessarily meant to be a literal elucidation.  Does your process tell the story? Is a legacy or mythos revealed through your work or your process? Does your work seem to create a realm?  Do you inadvertently honor or celebrate the plethora of...through your work? Verum Ultimum Gallery invites artists on this quest to discover the exhibition that defines “A Generous Kingdom II”.
